maths remedial tml July 11 Orange Magazine InterviewLiving in his three-storey terrace in the laid back atmosphere in Pasir Ris, Derek is an average boy in your friendly neighbourhood. We've drove our van down to his house on a rainy tuesday evening and gave him a surprise interview. about his school life and his interest.
[0range]: So how have you been in school?
Derek: Well, I'm doing well in [Siglap Secondary] school. This year is an important to me as my 'N' levels starts in early September. I have not really started revising, perhaps next week or so. I have just taken my English and humanities common tests and I don't think I will ace it as I don't have any confidence in passing. [0range]: How are you doing in you CCA?
Derek: I joined Photography Club when I was secondary one. I was considered a 'ghost member' as i did not turn up for 75% of attendance. I was not clear about the whole CCA system and also, I followed a wrong group of friends who did not go for CCAs and was heavily dealt with. So I hurriedly changed directions and became active in Secondary two and three. It came to my attention that my CCA points were rather low compared to my friends. So this year, Secondary four, I bugged by friend to accompany to join Chinese Orchestra earlier this year. We will be performing for National Day, our first live performance. I'm feeling nervous just by thinking, yet excited about it. [0range]: I really wish I could see the performance on that day, are you prepared?
Derek: [Laughs]...So far, my [cello] section has attended to 6 lessons and we just did a group reheasal today to get the whole atmosphere, also to add in the sounds of the drums and the 'Er Hu", etc.. to hear what is the end product when everything is pieced together. I think we are still not really prepared. [Laughs]
[0range]: Have you get on stage?
Derek: I was called on stage in primary school as my friend 'betrayed" me. I used the F-word in a joke, and he reported it to the discipline master. The joke was not personal attacking at all but we were young though, I cannot really blame him. I was to sit in front of the whole school on stage for that..[Laughs].. In secondary school, I performed a solo routine on Teachers Day two years ago and hoping to do it again. I shared about "bullying" on a weekly programme on stage as well as getting an award for my photography club last year. I really enjoy my time on stage.
[0range]: What music do you listen to? Derek: I like to listen english songs, instrumentals, original songs taken from samples. Different songs for different mood. I like Alicia Keys for the time being as her songs give a nice soothing feeling. I try not to idolise anyone now as I feel that its just too far from reality. I do not really fancy chinese songs. [0range]: Okay now answer these short questions. Indoor or outdoor?
